El Voyager 2 es parte del programa Voyager con su nave hermana idéntica Voyager 1 que se encuentra en misión extendida con la tarea de localizar y estudiar los límites del Sistema Solar, incluyendo el cinturón de Kuiper , la heliosfera y el espacio interestelar.
El voyager 2 es la única nave espacial que ha visitado los dos planetas gigantes: Urano y Neptuno.
El voyager 2 pesa 722 kg (1.590 libras), se mueve a una velocidad de 15,428 kilómetros/segundo, es uno de los objetos artificiales más lejanos (junto con el Voyager 1, Pioneer 10 y Pioneer 11) y estará transmitiendo hasta el año 2030.
